A message to our friends:
The passing of our daughter, Amanda, on May 20, 2005, has
been a difficult adjustment for all of her family and friends. Fred
and Nancy Gillis established the Amanda Gillis Foundation to
help support the Center for Independent Living, a non-profit residential
and educational program for homeless young adults 16 to 21. After
retiring in 1994 the Gillis founded the program to assist foster
care and high-risk youth who had very little family support. In
2003 the Center changed its mission to assist homeless youth towards
becoming independent adults. Up to 500 youth a year have benefited
from the emergency shelter, transitional housing and educational
and vocational programs. The Center has prospered and is
now supported by many individuals and foundations. The Nevada
Community Foundation manages this fund, which is the Centers first
endowment dedicated to the future needs of homeless youth.
Amanda was a beautiful girl who was very involved in the project. She
touched the lives of many through her compassion and empathy for
those less fortunate and she had the ability to inspire those around
her with her courage and spirit.
If you want to provide for the future needs of homeless youth
at the Center for Independent Living, please follow the instructions
