Workshops

Since 1999, the Center for Independent Living has been witness to the remarkable personal growth of our homeless and high-risk youth during their participation in the Cirque du Monde Workshops.  Most of our youth come from background where positive role models do not exist and they lack the self-respect to move forward and become successful adults.  It is a privilege to have their trained professional come to  our program and energize our youth to attempt and accomplish circus skills such as juggling, gymnastics, miming, the use of stilts and unicycle.  Sharing the tricks of the trade makes what would seem impossible to our youth, not only possible but fun.  More importantly, these entertaining and physical activities play a great part  in developing concentration, a positive attitude toward ones own ability, trust in others and an understanding of teamwork.

The patience and ability to empathize with our youth is an ingredient we most appreciate with the Cirque du Monde instructors. Many of our youth are reluctant to participate and need to be encouraged to overcome their fears.  The Cirque du Monde Workshops present opportunities for the instructors to work on an individual basis  with hard-to-reach participants and this mentoring makes a real difference.

We hope to continue this partnership for many years to come.  We must thank Cirque du Soleil on behalf of our youth for your generous gifts, from your workshops to your fundraisers with all the priceless gestures of friendship in between.  The Cirque du Soleil / Center for Independent Living Partnership has been a most important factor in assisting our homeless and high-risk youth and supporting our mission to help them.
